The drive was long from here to Nashville, but uneventful and very pretty. Nashville and Emory are approximately 4 hours apart, through the Great Smoky Mountains, another gorgeous drive.
Vanderbilt is in the western part of the city, in a beautiful, very safe area (for those of us with daughters). They shuttle you lots of places if you choose, and the downtown area, while small, is incredibly cool if you like music. To be that close to the Ryman, the Opry, Music Row - to die for! My daughter LOVED the music scene and again, it's incredibly safe. And I'm not a city person, so I don't say that lightly, meaning I get nervous in cities (yes, wuss, I know

) The campus is gorgeous, the architecture very pretty, and they seem to have a lot for the students to do. Having the hospital very close by is great for those studying any of the medical fields.
Emory is in a suburb of Atlanta, and again, is very safe. The campus is beautiful, the environment very inviting. I have never met a better student tour guide - she absolutely sold the school to me and my daughter after a rather scripted talk by admissions - I had been on the fence. Emory also has a hospital right on campus. My daughter is planning on becoming a nurse-practitioner so this is a nice feature for her.
Classes at both schools were varied and interesting. Emory, I think, is perfect for students who love a small-feeling warm, nurturing environment. Little touches we appreciated at Emory were a sink in each dorm room so one can brush teeth, wash hands, etc without going down the hall, a very well-stocked school store with gourmet choices as well as regular foods, a killer gym building, and the opportunity to rent zip cars if needed, as well as great shuttle services. There is a Whole Foods about 5 minutes away. Vanderbilt, on the other hand, offered well laid-out dorm rooms, a park-like campus, and access to world-class music and events.
Just wanted to provide my observations re: both schools. DD will apply to both, and continue looking for others to apply to, but if she stopped now and only chose a couple safety schools, she would be happy.
