I have curly, dry hair that breaks easily. I rinse it with water and condition it daily. I wash it about once a week.

Genetic? I am 44 now. I now get a semi-perm all over color every 5 weeks to cover roots.
I think if I highlighted it would be too damaging for my hair. I think this is also why my hair has stayed glossy. I am not stripping/bleaching it. It's dark so highlights would be damaging.
