There are some great writers out there right now that write quality literature that is also fun to read. Check out the Women's Prize for Literature, formerly the Orange Prize, for some great ideas.

East of Eden is my favorite book ever. I made myself read only one chapter a night so it would last longer.
For an interesting literary experience, I'd suggest Moll Flanders in the original and print out a reader's guide to help you with the references and older English.

I have read most of the above, and all are great books, but I wouldn't call them page turners. I am not sure "literature" and "page turner" can be in the same category.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is fantastic.
The BBC puts out a list of the 100 best books to read. Definitely worth going through.
