Subject: What tax prep software are you using and what did you think?

yes they do figure out, for example, if you are better off with a standard deduction or itemized (or sales tax vs income tax). I think they probably would do MFJ vs MFS but a) 99% of the time MFJ will be better and b) if for some reason it doesn't do it automatically, I think you could probably just save one version and go back and change that one option it will rerun the numbers

Turbotax is OK. We've used it for years -- the downloadable version that runs on your computer. But if you run into a weird situation, that's when it seems to just start asking questions straight off the forms without any explanation or help, when you would need it most. That includes for AMT (alternative minimum tax). If you don't run into anything unusual, it works fine.

Turbotax is pretty good. There are a few things it can't do, like gift tax.

Definitely, Turbo Tax. We have a rental and a number of investments, so I use the Premier version. I love just logging in to my investment accounts and it automatically downloads it into the forms. NO input necessary on my part.

We use TurboTax Home and Business just because I have my own business and, as my wife and I work jointly on our taxes at different times, it clearly tabs business items separately making it convenient for her. But, not necessary.

I will say that if you buy the desktop/download version of turbotax then you don't need to buy the super fancy version-- the "deluxe" is fine, and basic is probably fine too, although they will probably suggest you pay more (always easier to buy the cheaper version and upgrade if you need to).
+1. I've only used Turbo Tax. I think you need the Deluxe version to itemize, but could be wrong.

I will say that if you buy the desktop/download version of turbotax then you don't need to buy the super fancy version-- the "deluxe" is fine, and basic is probably fine too, although they will probably suggest you pay more (always easier to buy the cheaper version and upgrade if you need to).

I used H&R Block Online and it was fine. But I did have to sort of know what I was doing in a few places and recognize one key area where I made a big mistake.

We are going to do our own taxes this year - sold and bought home, a few investments, nothing complicated.
Raed some reviews but looking for first hand experience on any retail versions of software that are easy, complete and accurate.
