I am light blue-eyed natural brunette and there is no way I'd risk the documented side effect of darkening iris. My eyes are my thing.

I have only ever used mascara a couple of times because my eyes are really sensitive and no matter what kind I use or how careful I am putting it on, my eyes become unbearably itchy and red. However, on the plus side I have really long lashes. I have found using just a little bit of coconut oil on the tip of my finger to shape them does about the same of mascara and it doesn't bother my eyes.
Oil? I use mascara mainly so that my blonde eyelashes stand out. Oil wouldn't do anything. I look really plain without mascara, but maybe it wouldn't be the same if I had black eyelashes to begin with.
