Subject: Re:insight about summer school for middle schooler?
I would speak to the math department chair along with the teacher and assistant principal as soon as possible to figure out the best approach for the remainder of this year, the summer, and next year. See what the various options are and don't wait for the unclear teacher to come through with guidance.

This won't be very helpful but why is she taking Algebra in 7th grade and getting a D? That is accelerated math and it seems like she probably went too fast, would have been better for her to stay on her own track but at this point probably too late to switch and you should look for summer help where you can find it.

And when she retakes the class, the new grade will replace the old one on her transcript. It'll be like that D never existed at college time.

Probably not what you are hoping for but I practically failed Algebra I in 7th grade even with a tutor. I didn't quite get the concept or hang of Algebra until I took Algebra II than it all kind of clicked and I got an A. I think I just needed more time developmentally and with other Math topics to really get it.

Yes..retake next year. Speak to the school to ensure a different teacher. Another thought is find another mcps algebra teacher to tutor so they are familiar with the curriculum

I don't think the middle schools offer Algebra 1 as a summer school course, so she would have to take it at a high school. And if she's struggled with it this year, it doesn't seem like a rapid, condensed version is going to set her up well for geometry.
She can re-take the class next year. One of my son's friends did so. If she's having a hard time, why rush things?

Yes, OP here -- I would love to find out but the teacher is just so vague about it.
I will ask for a meeting with teacher and asst. principal but I'd just like to know in advance how summer school works. That way I know if I should suggest it or what i should do if they suggest it.

Can you not read? She clearly said the teacher is resistant to help figure out what the problem is.

So i have a kid who's in Algebra I in 7th grade and is making a D. She's really struggled and i blame a bunch of factors, including poor study habits, a learning disability, a teacher who's kind of checked out and of course the dreaded curriculum 2.0.
i have tried talking to the teacher about a tutor, but the teacher is resistant to helping me figure out where she's not getting it. There's no written curriculum in any detail, so i'm not sure how I would get a tutor involved.
Which brings me to my question. If she flames out, can she retake the course over the summer and improve her grade? What are the criteria for retaking a high school level class?
i cant' find it on the MCPS website and I'd like to be forearmed with my own info before I approach the school.
