If my child started K at Level 16 or higher would she have a peer group at your school? DD is admittedly an unusual child who would rather read than play with friends at age 5.

Level 15. They meet once a week tops. It is beyond annoying. The smart kids get the shaft. They dumb them down and claim comprehension as the issue. It isn't for anyone in her group. They all are smart and aren't being challenged so the teacher can focus on the challenging kids. My kid gets busy work everyday.

PP, it sounds like you have a great teacher at a great school. Would you mind telling us what school or at least what city or cluster?

Different poster here.

This is also the case at our school for K. They stop at 16. Teacher said that DD needs to work on writing, and that ER writing needs to catch up with the reading? But they don't work on 'writing' during Literacy Centers (other than copying sight words, etc). So, we work on writing at home with her.

This is not true at my son's school. He is currently reading Level K books along with 5 other classmates, and was told that they are moving on to the next level (L) next week. I'm glad that his teacher doesn't limit the children's learning and adjusts to the needs of the students. As far as frequency - I believe his group meets 1-2x week. He does a lot of reading on his own at home, so I don't worry too much that it's not every day.

I wasn't aware there was a 16 cap for K, is that true?
My child is at 15. Once they get to 16, do they just stay there, then?

My child goes to a NoVA parochial, and they do not have reading groups in K. She is my first child so I don't know if this is common in VA, or common in parochials, or what, but, shrug, that's how her school does it. I think they are trying to get most kids up to the same basic level, and then reading groups start in 1st.

In K, they are doing this common core reading program: SuperKids: http://www.superkidsreading.org/superkids-reading-program/kindergarten.php

I am the PP. When he doesn't bring home a new book I have him read a BOB book with me.

We have five in our K class. I volunteer quite a bit, so I know that they are at Levels 4, 6, 8, 11 and 14.

My kid is in Level 11. Her group meets about once a week, maybe twice.

When my son was in K he seemed to also have reading group only once a month (teacher not great and he started at the level 16 cap). We just let him pick out books at the library to read. He went through a bunch of series (Magic Tree House, Time Travelers etc). In retrospect we should have been working with him a little more on writing about what he was reading but that was not something he enjoyed at the time.

My kindergartener brings home books once, maybe twice a week but I am not sure how much they are meeting.

In MCPS, guided reading groups are supposed to meet every day. Really.

I teach K and have 20 students. I have four groups and one kid who is seen alone because no one else is close to his level.

I haven't had a chance to volunteer much this school year but I did today and realized that we have six in our class of 25 and the top few meet about once a month? The one my DD is in (just below level 6) meets several times a week.

How many groups does your kindergartener's class have and what are the different groups working on? If your child's group doesn't meet very often what do you do at home to help her/him stay engaged??
