You know that a 1 st grader's telling of a story is not always accurate right?
You know that we all know you posted about this non issue once before right?

Actually I am NOT the OP on this thread and I posted something similar about a month ago but didn't post this on 3/15/2014. This is clearly a different person posting now. (To be fair - I clicked on the title thinking it was what I wrote but quickly realized that the actual post was written by someone else with the same problem.)

The school year might be almost over but there were still 4 months left when I posted another complaint and it's going to be an issue again next year so it's always worth looking into.

The obnoxious response wasn't helpful by the way. There are a lot of schools in MOCO and all would have the same awful substitutes in theory. If your point is that we should change schools - how does one change public schools for a problem like this? I'm seriously interested if you know a way. Otherwise your comment really wasn't useful in any way. Should we move out of MOCO because of the substitutes? Perhaps trying to improve the selection process for subs would be a more helpful route?

So to answer the person who wrote this particular post who was probably looking for a less sarcastic response - YES we have problems with the subs too. Some are just downright cruel to the kids. MOCO gives little training or guidance to the subs and there seems to be very little consideration given to kids who are upset by these subs. Speak to the Principal about specific subs and ask them to be blocked. Staff seem to ignore what the kids say for the most part. My point is that 6 and 7 year old kids might not articulate the problem very well. However, if they are that upset with a sub, there is a reason for it and it should be looked into.

I actually believe that a 1st grader is more likely to tell the truth than the substitute the child accuses of being mean to them. If the sub wasn't a problem, why would the kids speak up? If the sub was yelling like the kids said, why would the sub ever admit this? There is nothing to be gained by the sub telling the truth so I'm not sure why the children's accounts should be dismissed. They are typically pretty good judges of character and some of the strict subs are their favorites so it's not an issue of just having a strict sub. The kids are upset because some of these subs feel free to say and do whatever they want without any regard for how it impacts the young kids. Subs know they can just say that the kids are little and hope nobody believes that the kids are the ones who are telling the truth.

My son felt the same way about subs in 1st grade. Basically the waste of a day. By about third grade, he liked having subs -- even if they were disorganized.

My son has had various substitutes this year in 2nd grade. Some he says are fine, and a few he says are bad. One he actually wrote a homework story about (which qualifies the experience as pretty memorable in his life).
Luckily he only had the particular sub once. Most of the time he has the same one or two people, and they seem good.
If we had someone who was particularly bad I wouldn't hesitate to send a note to the principal.

This is our experience as well. I have a mainstreamed SN child and the subs usually email me at the end of the day to let me know how the day went.

My kids used to love when there was a sub.

My 1st grader comes home, when they have a sub, very upset. So far they have not had a sub in her class that could handle the class. She said each of the subs so far has spent the day yelling at the kids (happened 4 times this year so far--different subs). She also said the day is very disorganized. Now, I know it's just the way it is when there is a sub and I have told DD as much. Has this been your DC's experience with subs in ES in MOCO?
