Oh good lord. I just want my kid to run around and get exercise and have some fun.

He/she will get that. It's just a way to keep the games relatively even. I've been on both sides of massive blowouts, and they're not really fun for anyone.

Best bet: Don't tell the kids what division they're in. If they were in an elite travel league, they'd know, and that's fine. In this case, "we're playing the green team today" is all they need to know. It's good for a coach to tell parents if they're moving up or down a division just so everyone will know they're facing tougher or weaker competition.

Is it possible that there are so much teams - like 20 teams or something, so they're doing divisions based on location?? So that everyone plays everyone else in their "division".

that should be bottom 2 move down, top 2 move up

In Arlington the teams are grouped by the prior season standings. Each year teams are regulated, top 2 move down a division, top 2 move up a division. This keeps similarly skilled teams playing each other.

If there is a mismatch you get situations where it is 8-0 at half time and one team gives up essentially and the other team goes a bit crazy (and injuries are actually very likely as one side fights like crazy to score and the other plays at 50%).

Ok, so in the fall, I think DD's team had a (slightly) winning record -- maybe 5 wins and 3 losses or something. So, with a record like that they're not going to be grouped to play teams that went 8-0 or 7-1 and similarly won't be grouped with teams with losing records, I take it?

I hope that's all it is. I don't want this to become some sort of high-pressure thing.

+1. It is no fun to never score a point-- which could happen if teams are really mismatched in skills.

Dear Coach,

What does "second division" mean?

Thanks,

It's probably a division based on age that the rec league is using.

Like Bantam, Midget, PeeWee, etc.

If it's still bothering you, you could casually ask another parent at a practice "Hey, do you know what the heck 'second division' means?"

My 3rd grader's rec team is playing this Spring (their first season was last fall).

The coach just e-mailed to say they will play in the "second division."

What does this mean? Is it just a way or organizing the teams? Or is it an indication of team strength or what?

This is rec ball, for whatever it's worth.
