Call Nordstrom and set up an appointment with a personal shopper. Tell them what you are looking for and they will help you -- let them know if you have a budget, etc.

You should also consider hiring a stylist. I used a Groupon for Cathy Starnes and was very pleased with the service she provided. http://stylespeaks.com/ I had her go through my closet and help me put outfits together. She used to work at Nordstrom as a personal shopper and she is very nice and easy to work with.

Congrats on the job! Lots of good suggestions here, but to answer your specific question - rounded or pointy toed shoes are both fashionable. Brown tote sounds great. And we're in a pretty good pants world right now where anything goes - a lot of people are wearing slim pants that are ankle-length, so you're on the right track. I think Loft, the Gap, The Limited are all great ideas.

agree with PP about the personal shopper, if you need to start from scratch.

also believe it or not, The Limited has some great business clothes, (a few cheesy things but great jackets and suit pants) and they have sales all the time.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I hadn't even thought about Talbots (thought that it was for my mother) but looked at the website and it looks great. I was happy to see skirts that touch the top of the knee! Lots of other good ideas posted too.

Pick a store that fits you well.

Get a baby sitter. Give yourself 3 hours.

Go during the day when they are slow. Ask for help.

For tall, I think J Crew and BR work well for business casual and you will be able to get a few outfits there head to toe.

I second Talbots. They often have 30 percent off sales. The leather tote sounds fine. A lot of people wear rounded ballet flats. Pointed toes with kitten heels are making a comeback. I'd get as little as possible at first until you get a feel for the office dress culture.
