I've worked at Murch. It is overdue for a modernization.

How did Janney jump the line on Murch?

Now that Janney is going to have its second modernization in 5 years, it seems right that Murch should be renovated too.

Hard to miss the temporary spaces at Murch. I will grant that the playground and turf field are pretty awesome, but just about everything else about the physical plant is an embarrassment.

Admittedly, I didn't visit the classrooms to check on how many outlets are in there I guess I did notice the lunch equipment in the hallway, but it didn't stand out to me as unacceptable. I didn't see the temporary classroom space, so I have no idea what the conditions are in that space.

My impression overall was that Murch is a bright, well-maintained school. And all the bathroom doors even seemed to be there!

Compared to Marie Reed or Garrison or Bancroft... Murch looks amazing. In any case, I hope that the mayor would find money to renovate ALL the schools as promised. But if I had to choose, Murch would be lower on my list.

You lost me when you said you hadn't seen the temporary space. While a few of the trailers are less obvious in the back, one temporary building has been there for 25 years and you have to go around some of the trailers just to get to the main entrance of the school.

I have heard it is very overcrowded.

Are you sure you're thinking of Murch?

It opened in 1929 and has never been renovated. It has no cafeteria or kitchen; breakfast is prepared and eaten in a hallway, and lunch is prepared in the hallway and taken to classrooms. Most classrooms have only two outlets.

It's also insanely overcrowded: One-third of the classroom space is temporary. It's the city's second-biggest ES and has half the per-pupil space required by DCPS.

So, yes, really. If you don't believe it, come for a tour. I think you'll be surprised.
