Are you talking about Middle School with MathCounts? Or elementary school with Math Olympiad? The age level matters - the higher the grade, the more intense the prep, etc....

Another option would be to hire an older kid or a teacher to help with the substantive part and you be the administrator. The parents whose kids participate can split the cost.

Exactly, there might be another parent or teacher that wants to do the math stuff but doesn't want to do the organizational and paperwork stuff.

Varies from school to school. Some schools require a teacher sponsor. (I have often seen that at the middle school level.)

I suggest starting by asking your school principal or school counselor.

I wish our school had a Math Olympiad team. I'd like to start one, but I wouldn't be so great at leading it (my son is a math whiz, unlike mom or dad - not sure where he got that from!). Is there anyone out there who knows whether the parent who forms the team is also the person who leads it, or does a teacher or some other person usually lead it?
