Derives from the word Gypsy, which itself is a derogatory term for Roma people.

I think it has evolved. I was on Babycenter, and they made a point about other words that have unsavory roots but are not marked as "slurs"

This. I don't use it, but I generally assume those who do are just uninformed and not meaning to offend.

Yup. It's one of those words that is more often spoken so people don't even realize how it's spelled therefore how it could be offensive.

I have only ever hear it used as an example of an offensive slur. I think it is less offensive than other slurs, in that someone would use it as an example because they were trying to avoid saying more offensive slurs, but it is still quite offensive.
