My kid tested in the 101% on the tests.

This varies by school. At our elementary school they provide pull out programming for some gifted students in 3rd grade. They wait until 3rd when students have been identified, though it is not enough to be identified to get the pull out.

There is no gifted programs in third grade. The form, teacher recommendations and the Inview tests are used to identify kids as "gifted". Apparently this is as high as 30 to 40% of kids. Not sure of this but I think the test scores are the main factor.

My kid was identified (99% on the tests) but nothing has changed, he is still in the highest reading and math groups and not really challenged as has been the case for the last 3 1/2 years.

What kind of gifted programs do they have in 3rd grade? I know they have the HGCs for 4-5. Does this just group them by ability in reading/math/etc?

Where I don't know I just say Not Observed.

Yes go ahead. It is just so they can say there is parent input in the process. If you actually apply to a HGC next year you will fill out a more extensive form. That one matters a small amount more.

I just got the mcps survey regarding my second grader. I have no idea how to answer many of these questions, and don't really understand the purpose to which they will be put. I don't know of she learns better on a structured or unstructured learning environment. I'm not an educator and don't even really understand what that means. Does anyone have any insight into the purpose or effect of this? Not to be crass, but should I just say that everything is a strength for her of I want her to get into the gifted program? I'm not sure what the benefit of a parent's assessment is. She seems smart to me, but I'm not exactly unbiased, not am I out there quizzing other second graders on their math skills, so I don't really know if kids nowadays are just all pretty smart.
