Most do. It's a good environment.

DS got in last year without appeal. Don't remember scores, but neither NNAT or COGAT put him in the pool. Did not get WISC. He had good grades (mostly 4s) and, based on how his teacher talked about him to me, likely a good GBRS. He is thriving in 3rd grade AAP, and I never doubted for a moment that is where he belongs.

DC got in the first round last year with NNAT 155, CogAT 93% (95 was cutoff) and GBRS 10. We filled parent questionnaire and submitted the max allowed work samples. When I reviewed DC's screening file later, even though I was disappointed with DC's GBRS (I expected higher), the commentary accompanying the GBRS was very strong, and matched perfectly with what we had in the parent questionnaire. I am convinced that the commentary carries more weight with the screening committee than the actual GBRS number. So OP, ask to review the file and you'll have a better understanding of what to expect. Good Luck!

Do you mean you submitted the parent questionnaire? If your child had a 160 on the NNAT then you would have been in the pool and no need to refer.

There are 2 parent forms. There is a parent questionairre (for parent referrals as well as the pool).
The other is a parent referral form completed by parents of students not in the pool. A teacher referring a student would use the same form.
Kids can also self-refer although that doesn't seem common. My friend's 6th grader got in this way.

Wow that's really good to know that, this is a possibility if you are lucky to get a good GBRs following year.

I'll be honest, GBRS is the key without WISC, at least for us. We had lower Naglieri, 122. CogAt was 140. 2nd grade GBRS was 9. Submitted appeal with letters and work samples and were denied. We parent referred in 3rd, with no new testing ( could not afford WISC ) and got in 1st round. They used same scores from prior year FCPS testing plus GBRS from 3rd grade teacher.

Thanks for responding. When can we request file from AART?
Also if WISC is not an option, what are other options out there to make appeal feel stronger?

+1 (or would that be +2 to PP?)

Last year DC got in first round with 150 NNAT, really low CogAT (70% overall when the benchmark was 95% (there was only one last year)) and GBRS 13. I agree with the PP that you'll have a better idea what your child's chances are if you know the GBRS.

Let me know if you did not get in too so I can decide what is next step. Really can't afford WISC.

Thanks

I would request GIBRS after file is submitted. That would help you more than other scores, since GIBRS are such a big component to the process.
