Glad to hear about Thai Chef. They were closed a few months ago. Maybe a renovation or just some temporary difficulty.

OP here -- Thanks, all, for the suggestions. We went to Pizzeria Paradiso, which we've been to before, though our guests had not. Everything was delicious, and since we went on the early side, it was pretty quick (though I know this isn't always the case if you go later in the evening).

If you don't mind kind of a crappy atmosphere (small, dark, tv on), the food is really good at Take Eat Away on M Street. (Between McDonald's and Vidalia.)
Ate at thiaphoon tonight and the food was subpar. Did not enjoy it. Won't return. Yelp reviews are wrong. Drove past thai chef after and it was open.

Ugh. The burgers, dogs, and fries at Shake Shack all suck. The only good things are the shakes and the beer and wine.
I totally don't get the rush over that place. I do, however, get asked where it is by a lot of Asian tourists.

Raku's also not a bad idea.
On Connecticut, there's the fried chicken and donuts place, next to the trendy (but not kosher) deli. I haven't tried either one, but people seem to like them.

Thai Chef is pretty good- it's on Connecticut north of the circle.
Thaiphoon on Ct and S- also good.
Circa is delicious but a little less casual and more expensive.
If you want really casual, BGR is right there and also yummy.
