My question for the teacher is do the students have the opportunity to earn a ES? How would that appear on a typical classroom assignment?

At our school anything wrong in spelling gets you an "I" all correct is a "P". Love the consistency!!!

Unprovoked, all my children will affirm they have learned little in school (and only encountered one inspirational teacher in cumulative 10 years in the system -- 3 kids) and credit what they have learned outside the classroom (Kahn, AoPS, MOOC, parent instruction) as the reason for their acclaimed success and inside and outside of school.

As a reflect I can honestly, however regretfully, admit the MCPS school system (in the early and primary elementary and middle school years) has served as a day care center for all my children. Their education and intellectual stimulation was provided outside the system because MCPS failed to provide this for our own particular children.

Two out of 3 of the kids did wait to avail themselves of HGC and middle magnet opportunities but these programs were uneven -- largely weak in the humanities, languages, writing, and art.

Given your attitude towards MCPS, I am grateful that your children were not in my children's classes.

My 4th grade DD constantly misspells 1-2 words on her spelling test every week. And every week she receives a P. I know she is capable (with some more effort) of spelling 100% correctly. But how to motivate?

And for those who say that she should somehow be intrinsically motivated to do better (and not by grades), I say, get. real. Grades motivated me all the way through high school, to a top college, to a top law school, to a top law firm. What's wrong with being motivated to achieve a certain grade to achieve a goal?

I don't know. How do you motivate her to do other things that she doesn't want to do but you want her to do?

And I don't think that there's anything wrong with being motivated by grades. I do think that there is something wrong with being motivated only by grades, especially in elementary school. If you don't have intrinsic motivation, then you go to your top college to your top law school to your top law firm to...what?

If MCPS wanted to get rid of the ES altogether, I wouldn't object.

It is possible that her kids are so advanced that no school will adequately serve their needs. Maybe Davidson Academy can. But they are faraway.

Will this change motivate everyone? Possibly no.

Will some kids get motivated? My answer is yes.
- Do you see there is a POTUS and a number of Olympic champions?

Did you read anything on DCUM lately? 100% is not going to automatically translate into ES. Mastery of above grade stuff is not automatically translate into ES. The only thing reliably translate into ES is if the kid write a tedious paragraph or two or three about something obvious. That is the above and beyond they are looking for.

Good read the thread about what will happen to 2.0 in a few years. A current MCPS teacher admitted that was how she was instructed to do.

Driving all students towards the goal of straight P students is an amazing idea.

Questions are:
1) Will this make our society a great society in the future?

2) Will this make sure that our kids can survive and be successful in future global competition?

3) Is this the best that our current/future education system can do?
