Hovde is a financial sector focused fund in Georgetown. Just over $500 m in assets. EJF is in VA, run by Manny Friedman. ~$6 billion in AUM.

Yep, you nailed it -- DC metro area has a lot of RIAs that are using classic hedge fund strategies but are structured as RIAs, not funds.

Yes, there are hedge funds in the DC area. But, as someone pointed out, if you have to ask... There's one hedge fund that has been super successful and now manages in the billions. In general, hedge funds don't want publicity, so you won't find much info on them.

I suggest using Thomson, BigDough, Factset, etc...

Are you looking to work for one? Yes, there are plenty of "hedge funds", although your definition is probably much broader than that. When the general public thinks of hedge fund they think of alternative asset management firms. And there are plenty of those here. Greater than $500 million? Probably not that many. Most alt mgmt firms are small, and often only 5-10 people.

For local firms, think of the companies in this area, and you will find firms who specialize in that sector. Govt contracting, security, IT, to some extent web services, content publishers...there are all funds here for that (the same way that Houston has a ton of energy related funds.)

Still, the bulk of rapid trading and traditional hedge fund operations are in NY/NJ/CT.

Are there any large/reputable hedge funds in the DC area? i.e., >$500mm in assets.

Know that Carlyle has a hedge fund arm, but I think it's located in NYC/CT.
