Aren't there other companies that make soda making machines?

2nd, or any other company like it.

It makes bubbly water & fits in the refrigerator (not another appliance for the counter). IDK if you could use the syrup with it somehow.

Yeah, but that requires a separate disposable CO2 cartridge for every liter of water-- very expensive and wasteful.

LOOOOOOVE my sodastream. Seriously, the best purchase I've ever made.

Try to figure out which model you want--bottle sizes are different, so are CO2 cartridges, some of the models take up a lot of counter space and some of them are known to malfunction. I'm not sure I want to have another thing I want to maintain even though I hate paying for all the seltzer we drink. Take a look at Amazon for a bigger swath of reviews.

I've had one for about 10 years (hoping that means it was at least not made in the West Bank) and it's been fantastic for plain carbonated water. I have a simple version, with large plastic bottles and large CO2 canisters and I haven't had any malfunctions (I am actually having a hard time understanding what a malfunction would look like, but maybe some of the newer version are more complicated).

Another vote for "yes, buy one." We have a Deer Park cooler and used to get 12x 32oz bottles of sparkling with our monthly delivery. Bought a Sodastream and have eliminated the need for those & the corresponding waste, and we have dramatically cut back the amount of canned colas as well ... not necessarily b/c the cola flavoring is comparable to Coke (our fav) which it's not, but because the naturals flavorings + the options for simple fruit juice mixes offer so much to choose from that we have dropped our habit of grabbing a coke out of laziness. It's fun and good!

OP here -- forgot to also ask if the cola things are any healthier than regular stuff. So far, I think you're convincing me we should get one (I actually did consider the politics of it, and guess I'll have to factor that in, but it seems like maybe for us, creating significantly less waste might balance the human rights issues (and, hey, if it's good enough for Scarlett Johannson...)).

+1

Even if this is an important political issue for you, I still wouldn't support a company that is blatantly violating international law.

We love our soda stream but I'm not sure it will necessarily replace soda entirely, depends on how picky your husband is about the taste. We use ours for sparkling water, to which we add a squeeze of lemon or some juice. Even made our own ginger beer concentrate which was pretty delicious.

Yes I love the soda stream. I like sparkling water and will make it and put some lemon, orange, lime, strawberries, or ginger in. DH loves the natural brand of ginger ale and root beer. The natural line also has some great fruit flavored ones we use from time to time. I'm totally addicted to my soda stream

I love mine, but I don't use the flavorings. I tried the diet cola and it wasn't exactly like coke - why would it be - think diet rite and the like. I love club soda and think it's fantastic for that.

I drink a lot of Pellegrino/Perrier/etc; DH likes Coke and ginger ale. If we get a Sodastream can we cut down on waste (and heavy bags) without sacrificing much in the way of taste? I've never tried the machine, so am relying entirely on you good people and your sound advice.
