I've been to the one on 18th Street and also the one in downtown Silver Spring. I usually get it medium hot. I don't know how it would work with carry-out but if you're eating in, they have bottles of the sauce (I like the garlic kind) that you can add spice/flavor.
I'm now looking at the menu because you've got me hungry and if I was getting takeout for me, DH and DD (age 4), I'd probably get the full platter with peas and mashed potatoes, add a side of corn on the cob and a liver and feta salad and all share. For your family, I'd do the full platter for you and your husband and another similarly sized thing for the kids.
