That's what we did i.e. left private school for public. Fortunately that didn't require us to move house, as we were already living in the 'burbs.

What we found, in addition to more flexibility with math level placement, was a lot more STEM related extracurriculars - mathcounts, technology students association, regional, state and national science fairs, first lego league, VEX robotics, geography bee, AMC math competition etc. I realize that privates can participate in these, but we didn't see that happening as much at the place our kids attended, maybe because of smaller school size.

DS is in 6th grade. So it sounds like we would have to move to MD or VA for the math programs for public.

OP, if you're in MCPS, apply to the Blair math magnet for 9th. I have a 7th grader at the TPMS magnet who took algebra last year and will have finished Alg 2 by the end of 8th, like your child. Blair is pretty much the only game in town for a student like that, if math is your main concern.

What grade is your child in? You mention what was completed in 6th and what dc is taking now and what will be taken in 7th.

GDS has taken kids who are that accelerated or more and worked out an individualized program for them, however both recent kids in that category left after 11th grade to enter MIT. Your child now is going to get through linear algebra/MV calc after 11th if stays on this pace which is the highest class GDS offers normally.

Why don't you do Statistics and Probability in there for 7th or 8th so DC is more in line with the schools?

Congressional has great math and science programs, if you're looking for a K-8

How strong and what age? Most privates can take a kid into advanced calc and AP level sciences, so I would look at all the other factors (culture, etc). For exceptionally advanced math kids (planing to take linear algebra or above), GDS and only a few others. But ask -- not sure even those schools offer these classes each year or whether depends on number of kids ready to take them. For really top math/science, go magnet public if that is prime objective. But for more balance, private.

GDS is generally supposed to have a very good math program. St. Albans seems to have strong math/science in the Upper School (some high level options at the top end).

What grade? If she is younger, I imagine you'd want a generally strong math program; if older, you might look at particular classes or teachers.
