At our school you take one or the other. BC covers AB plus additional material.

Colleges expect 4 years of math in HS. After calc you can take multivariable calc and/or AP Stat. Our school also has a supervised independent study in linear algebra or something like that for the kids who took AP Calc in 10th grade. You can also take a course at UMD or MC although that could be logistically challenging.

Sounds like they are making a requirement of what colleges currently - now - expect for admission - - - for the student to take math senior year. Too often student's math sequence is so front-loaded having started Algebra in middle school, that the student has completed all the math they want to take before senior year. This is something for parents to think about when their bright, but maybe not math-loving child takes Algebra early.

Kids coming in very accelerated taking Calculus sophomore year. What do they do?

1. Discrete mathematics
2. Linear Algebra
3. AP Statistics
4. AP Computer Programming
5. Multivariable Calculus

Do you need other suggestions?

Found this blurb in the intro section of the high school course bulletin for next year:

"The class of 2018 will be the first class affected by a change in Maryland graduation requirements. All students graduating in 2018 and beyond are required to be enrolled in a mathematics course during each year of high school, grades 9-12. A list of courses satisfying this new requirement will be provided by the Maryland State Department of Education."

retake algebra 1 easy A ... better yet take honors algebra 1, work towards that 4.5 ... its all game, learn to play it now.

This is the problem with the highest acceleration. You end up taking analytical calc in high school...whether or not you need that high level of college math. However, most kids that take algebra in 6th grade are going to very competitive colleges who would want 4 years of math in HS anyway.

not sure we will cross that bridge when we get there. our kid is in compact math and older one is in two levels up, i am not worried about it.

DC is entering high school next year. Last night at the registration information session at the school, there was a very brief comment that there's a new requirement starting with the Class of 2018 that students must be enrolled in a math class every year through 12th grade. This apparently even applies to kids entering high school with math credits. The presenter quickly moved on to other topics and I didn't have a chance to follow-up, figured I'd find the details online this morning. But I can't find anything. Did I hear right?
