I think gay people can be married outside the church and that abortion is wrong. I am agnostic on contraception. I vote Democratic and consider myself liberal. Sorry to burst your bubble on your definition of a "lefty Catholic."

We believe in separation of church and state.

So do most other Catholics.

That is not a uniquely "left" thing.

Pp, I took lefty Catholic to mean a kumbaya, 1970s type Catholic, which is why I suggested the Prayer of St. Francis.

It means we think gay people should marry and abortion should not be illegal.

We also think that contraception should be covered by health insurance.

We believe God gave us free will and we do not work to take it away from people.

Not particularly lefty, but the Saint Teresa of Avila prayer is my favorite:

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things.
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices.

go to catholiccompany.com and there you can find some things you can have engraved.

You will laugh but what I did was order each of my kids a beautiful white stone cross to hang on their wall. I had engraved on the back

"I belong to Larla Darla Smith, born 1/1/2001"

and it's kind of cute when you flip it over and see it speaking to you in its own voice

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is error, truth;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Post 02/11/2014 22:47     Subject: Lefty-Catholic prayer/quote for baptism?

I was asked to be the godmother of the baby of very lefty-catholic friends of mine. I want to get the baby something engraved with an inspirational saying. Any suggestions? A great quote from a well known Catholic? A prayer that is upbeat, inspiring and forward looking? Something that touches upon "walking the walk" and "doing good deeds" might work particularly well.

Thanks for your help!!
