You can taste the food coloring, unfortunately. I'm thinking it's not too healthy for kids to ingest so much dye.

I made one. Used a white cake mix and lots of little bowls and good food coloring. Had 3 pans so baked 3 layers at a time. Make sure the frosting is white and not on too thick in the middle so you can see the colors. FYI blue doesn't show up very different from green. It's easy just time consuming. The thin layers do cook much faster so be vigilant.

I've made one. Six layers for my six year old's birthday. Use gel food coloring and weight the layers to get them even. I'll post a pic and the recipe...

I've made one and it came out really well. Just used store bought white cake and added the food coloring.

Will a cake cook properly with no yolks?

Has anyone ever made a rainbow cake using koolaid or jello for the color/flavor of the layers? Saw something for this once, but wonder if it turns out well in real life.

My son is having a LEGO birthday this weekend and I am thinking of making a LEGO head cake like the one in this link:

But, I thought that it might be fun - and go with the LEGO theme - to have the cake be a 'rainbow' of LEGO colors inside, to come up with something like this:

There is even the possibility of having the cake like a colored checkerboard inside, but that might be pushing it.

Anybody ever try one of these rainbow cakes? I worry about the likelihood of getting nice bright colors and relatively even layers.
