I find this hard to believe. What are they doing there? Are you counting the professors at Cornell Law School and the attorneys who work for the university? Ithaca is a VERY sleepy town, although great for its size and location. Personally, it's just too isolated fo rme to ever consider living there and the winters are terrible.

Ithaca NY is a university town. It is a desirable place to live for many. Relocating there would be hard...in terms of finding a job. I think Burlington VT has the same issues.

Saratoga Springs?

Small town law firms are a tough move for big city lawyers. If you are associates at a big firm here your DH probably makes more than many of the partners in Burlington or Ithaca. He probably needs to be clear that he realizes he will need to take a big pay cut to move (I assume that's your expectation?). The firms also tend to be small so aren't hiring very many people. Do either of you know people from law school in these markets? Can you network somehow? Go up for a few days and try to meet with people on an informational basis. I suspect sending in resumes won't get you anywhere.

Portland is a better bet and has somewhat larger firms. Rochester or Syracuse also have a few more medium size firms.

Burlington is amazing.

I don't know about the employment stats, but as the seat of government there is a decent-sized professional community. We have friends who relocated there (physican) and they love the quality of life for their kids. You have to like snow, though.

On your cover letter(s), write that you are already planning to relocate to Vermont/NY and this will dissuade their fears that they'll have to pony up for relocation. Bad news: nobody will want to pay you to relocate.

DH and I want to relocate, ideally to some place like Burlington or Ithica. We're both lawyers (though I'm a specialized field and will likely not work in law anywhere outside DC, which is fine with me; I'll do whatever). DH has applied to a couple of firms in Burlington, but hasn't received an interview, and I suppose a primary obstacle to hiring is that we're not local.

So: Any pointers on how to be attractive to out-of-state firms? Any other (eastern) towns we should consider with the Burlington/Ithica feel?

Bonus points if you have any connections you can share with us. We like DC but want to raise our two little boys somewhere else.
