In the city, stay at the Jefferson.

Otherwise you can get good prices at the Hilton in short pump (nicer) or cheaper at the aloft in short pump ($99 a night or so). The hilton is nicer and better sound insulation than the aloft. The aloft however offers a tv that you can plug a laptop or xbox or whatever into which can be a plus with kids. If you do aloft ask for a room far from other guests. The sound carries.

Short pump is 20 minutes to the city

Which is why I, as the poster of the hotel in chester, mentioned they might want to look for chains northside of Richmond. It actually is a midpoint between Richmond and Williamsburg if I am not mistaken (I do know it gave mileage to both places). If the OP is heading down to see sights in Richmond and cant check in anyway until 2 or 3 then this actually could be stopping point for them.

New poster here.. saying "midpoint" is a big of an overstatement. Chester is South of Richmond. Williamsburg is east. If you were going direct from DC to Williamsburg, OP would take 264 (north of Richmond) to 64.

But OP wants to stay in RIC one night. I'd stay downtown and be near the various museums and historic sights.

OP, I cannot recommend a hotel. I drive through Richmond all the time, but have never actually been. If I were going, I'd check tripadvisor.com. I'd start with any property listed in this thread.

Would take the Hilton instead of the glen Allen Marriott. Have stayed dozens of nights at each. The marriott is much older. Hilton is very very good. Also next to short pump mall.

If you want a super experience do the Jefferson downtown.

Marriott in glen Allen. Newer property and a smaller hotel. Close to where stuff happens in Richmond

We stayed at commonwealth suites with kids and it was perfectly fine. I think it's a reasonably priced choice if you want to stay downtown.

We stayed at the Sleep Inn out near Briarwood (?) -- past Midlothian, which is a suburb of Richmond. It was brand new and great. Just look on Trip Advisor - it ranks very highly.

Pre-kids, we stayed at The Jefferson. Very nice, but a different league!

You do not want to stay in Chester. It's completely out if the way since you're coming from the north and then heading east. My DH and I just did an overnight trip in Richmond last week. We decided because of the expensive rates we were finding right in Richmond to stay just outside of Richmond. We did have to go meet some friends past Richmond so this is one reason why we stayed here, but we were thrilled with the room, the cleanliness, etc. I cant remember but I think they might have suites. if this is down too far look for other locations for this chain, I would imagine they may all be the same.

Planning a long weekend with my kids (2 and 5). Will probably spend one night in Richmond and one night at Great Wolf in Williamsburg. Anything with a suite is especially helpful so DH and I don't have to go to bed at 7:30. Thanks!
