In my humble opinion, Pumpernickels in CC DC is far better than Bethesda Bagels, Goldbergs, and the other contenders.

Whole foods has "Just Bagels" http://www.justbagels.com/home/justbagels/ which are made in the bronx. As a former new yorker, these are the closest things I have found to the taste I got used to. I don't remember the cost per dozen but I don't think it was $14.

My favorite bagels are from Giant-- better than Bethesda Bagel, Bagel City, Einstein and definitely better than Goldbergs (in my opinion these are the worst). I don't know what the cost is, though.

Goldbergs. Yum! Not sure how much exactly they cost per dozen though. But worth every penny.

Like I said, the bakery section of most grocery stores. Usually in the loose bins. I.e., they bake them there on site. I picked up a mixed dozen today for $6.

Thanks, I like those too but I'm looking for the ones that are more "authentic" and less like chewy bread.

Then, suck it up and pay the premium, as pp said.

Or, just order some from St-Viateur Bagel. They are shipping to the states again.

Or, by the day-olds. They're usually cheaper.

These look amazing! Thank you PP! (And even shipped from Canada, they are half the price of Bethesda Bagels!)

Well, you're looking to buy hand-made bagels, so you will have to pay more. The bread-like ones are machine made, and therefore cheaper. You can decide what you prefer--save $$$ or pay your fair share for labor.

I just can't justify spending $14 on a dozen bagels. Anyone know where near Bethesda can we get bagels that are real (i.e., not like the white bread from Einstein Bros) but don't cost so much?
