We did an amended return and got our new refund in about 6 weeks. DC took about 3 months. We haven't been audited and assume they are not automatically audited.

OP, since you filed the retrun before the original due date it is considered superceded and you can file another return on form 1040. I do not believe you need to file an 1140X. Doublecheck with the instructions to the form.

Amended returns cannot be e-filed. Turbo tax is correct.

In my case, I wasn't expecting a 1098-T because I started school in January, but I was technically billed for it last year so it was a surprise to receive after I filed. I'm sending the original return, the amended return, the W-2's, and the 1098-T and other worksheet that shows why I'm getting the specific dollar amount credit.

I have filed electronically for many years now, but Turbo Tax says the amended return has to be mailed in... thanks for the above info, because it would not have occurred to me to mail in our original return along with our amended return.

The amendment I made will result in an additional $975 refund. Are all amended returns automatically audited? Does it really take up to four months (according to Turbo Tax) to get this refund? I already received the refund generated from the return I initially filed on January 27th.

No, they are not. Are you doing something that wouldn't hold up if you were audited? If not, don't worry about it.

The amendment was to add a dependent. My brother lived with us all of 2013 (and is still living with us) and did not receive any income of his own. We have two children, but it didn't occur to me to add him as a dependent when I originally filed our return because this is the first tax return it would have been an issue.

I've been filing tax returns since 1977 and this year is the first year I've filed an amended return so I'm not sure about this question.
