OP here again-- I meant recessed lights, not track lights! Sorry for the mistake. We want to replace the fluorescent kitchen light fixture with several recessed lights. We'd need to run the wires from the new recessed lights to the light switch currently used for the existing fluorescent fixture. Sounds like a few hundred dollars?

I'm confused. You want recess or track lighting? Track lighting should be a very cheap install. It should also be an easy install if they're using renovation cans for recess. The type of cans they'd do during an initial install would cost more.

We paid $150 for an existing room and $100 each for light as part of construction of an addition. Same electrician.

We did it with plaster ceilings in a hallway that had track lighting. It was about $100 including the light for each. Very pleased, but did have to repair plaster for wiring and repaint.

Also more difficult to do the patchwork around plaster. Plaster is also older and therefore more likely to break off requiring more extensive repairs.

Is you ceiling drywall or plaster?

This is key.

What if it's plaster?

More difficult to cut holes in a perfect circle. Somewhat more difficult to feed wires.

Thanks! And just to be clear, you guys weren't just retrofitting recessed lights in place of an existing ceiling fixture, right? Were you starting from scratch, so to speak?

It should be inexpensive. My painter charged 100-150 for 4, and that included the lights.

We would like to install four recessed lights in the kitchen. We'd supply the lights. How much should the installation labor cost? Thanks!!
