I too hate to see folks reaction as "Appalled" as so widely displayed in public forums. Disappointed sure, but it is tremendously disrespectful to those who were accepted to be "appalled." What??/ Those folks were given special consideration? You see it all too often, such refusal to accept that there are others who also work hard, perhaps harder, also very smart, perhaps smarter, and yes perhaps scored better on the test than ones own DC. It's a valuable lesson. The world doesn't hand you everything just because you think you are as good as others and no one is ENTITLED. Sorry for your DC about the waitlist. But it is going to happen many more times throughout her lifetime.

OP here. Thanks 16:23, you are very kind and you so get it. And I'm also going to say thanks to 16:01 for the pull-your-socks up message with some good advice because you're right about 'world of possibility'. Thanks to everyone for really positive comments, it helped.

PP -- give me a break. Let OP have her moment of pity, everyone needs it sometimes. Having an awesome 4.0 kid that gets rejected is hard. She isn't threatening a lawsuit. She is just profoundly disappointed. I am sure she and her kid will end up more than fine but give her a moment to be pissed. Hugs to you, OP.

OP you are in for a wake-up check if this is how you approach every situation, especially when it comes time for college. If she really is as good of a student as you say, she'll excel at whatever other school she goes to. Use this opportunity to appreciate how flexible her schedule could be now. She could take MOOC courses, enroll part-time at Montgomery College during senior year so she already has some credits before she starts college, etc. There is a world of possibility out there if you look hard enough. But there's no reason you should be "appalled."

Fwiw, I know a family who yanked their kid out of the MS magnet so he could have a more normal social life with his friends at the local school, sports, etc. and they met his needs (he took advanced classes at the local HS in his sat year in MS). And he went on to the local HS (no special programs) and he's excelled in the honors and AP classes. He will get into a great college and be successful in life.

So, no need to freak out about this, OP. Your bright kid will be just fine.

This is very true. I just had a conversation with my neighbor last week who told me that when her daughter got in to CAP last year, a number of her friends also got in off the waitlist. So do not lose hope. A fair number of the kids who were accepted were also likely accepted at multiple magnets and may choose to go elsewhere. So, it's ain't over.

We missed out on the MS magnets-- a little bummed out by it.

It is really hard and painful -- hugs to you and your child.

I have one kid who has been admitted to all levels of magnet and one who has been rejected from ES and MS magnets. It does really hurt.

The one thing I believe is that any high school in MCPS will afford opportunities for challenge, due to AP and other classes, and your kid will have the opportunity to be a big fish in a small pond, which has its advantages.

Sorry about your bad news. I have noticed that virtually all posts seem to be "we were accepted--to everything we wanted!". But I attribute that to the fact that people are more willing/excited to share good news.

We only applied to 1 magnet (RMIB), and we haven't heard yet. But we are braced for rejection, knowing how many apply and how few spaces there are. And I've told my child that if it is a rejection we won't know why exactly, but it won't be because she's not smart enough or good enough.

So my kid has a 4.0 and is an all-around outstanding student at a MoCo middle school. But the kid was only wait listed at CAP. Not in a middle school magnet as we moved into the district from far away while she was in middle school.

Kid asks 'what more could I do'.

Honey, I have no idea. Given they don't reveal the test scores, I can't even give any insight there ...

Rather bemused that everyone who posts talks about acceptances (usually to both CAP and IB at Richard Montgomery). So just thought I'd introduce some diversity here.

Also, thank you CAP for saying you mailed the letters 31 January, they're postmarked Feb 3rd ... just in case this wasn't stressful enough.
