My DD is wearing the LLBean Katahdin this year. She says it's very warm. Plus, it's parka length which she likes better (DD is 6). My DS wears a Columbia Sportswear Bugaboo (the 3-in-1 coat that has the removable fleece inside). I find it runs short since it does not come in parka length, but my DS gets 2 years out of it because I buy big.

I love Lands End coats because of the built in half mittens and the cool extendo arms (you can make the arms longer by cutting a seam!

Washes well and my preschool kid loves the thumb-hole sleeves. I like them because I can put mittens over the sleeve part and pull the jacket part over top. My kid is on the smaller side, so we might get another year of use out of the current size.

For the Lands End buyers--specifically, which one do you recommend? I will have a 3.5-year-old next winter, and would love to buy ahead now that they're on sale.

We got a North Face coat this winter (grandma bought it) and were happy. Thin enough for the car seat, but still very warm. But I'm not sure the cost is justifiable on our own budget when there are coats of equal quality for less.

we got my kids north face coats this year. not cheap but they are super warm and durable. got a size up in the hopes that i can recycle next year. we'll see.

I go with relatively thin coats and layer underneath when it's really cold. The thinner coats are safer in car seats. Plus, in general kids run warm so past the baby stage I worry about it a lot less. My kid never complains about being cold, and I know some kids who outright refuse to wear coats. We get Columbia - about $40 at Marshalls or TJ Max. They have a warm thin coat (got me the same style).

I got my toddler daughter a Lands End parka this year. She is very tall 13 month old and I have in the 2T. I love the coat becuase it has the "grow with you" arms that can be lengthened 1.5 inches as need and the fleece thumb holes that pull the sleeves down over her hands...esepcially great since my kid hates to wear gloves. Even better I got it for $20 in a jan sale on line! Normally $59 I think.

Isn't it annoying though when the Lands End sleeves turn inside out every time he takes it off? I'm inclined not to buy them for that reason.

Anyone try the coats from Hanna Andersson or Polarn o Pyret?

For everyone.

DD likes longer coats that hits above her knees. Very nice colors. Washable.

DS likes coats that cover his butt, but not longer than that.

Is this what people feel is too puffy? it doesn't seem to be on him, even though I buy a size up every other year.

It's very light weight, washes well, and he has never complained about being cold, even though he's outside all the time.

We have a baby ll bean coat that my large toddler still squeezes into. Second kid to wear the coat and it still looks like new. I just noticed that it has the thing where you cut a thread and can extend the sleeves (like many lands end coats have). Pleased with it.

My older kid has an rei coat and it's also pretty good looking.

We bought some lands end coats for next year, so glad to hear they are great!

We like the Land's Ends parkas better---especially because they are not puffy.

We have Land's End parkas that went through my sisters three boys (now in college), through my firstborn and now my Kindergarten is now wearing. They still look like new!!

I think the newer models--bought a new one for my 8-year old this winter aren't as good as the ones from 18 years ago. The sleeves turn inside out everytime he takes his coat off--friend has the same problem. They also have that hand thing---semi-glove.

Now that we've been through several freezing cold stretches here in the District, anyone willing to share feedback about their kids' winter coats? Anything you loved/hated? Anyone have winter coats you swear by every year for your kids?

We usually get the LL Bean parkas and have basically been happy, though I think the torsos are kind of short for even the average kid -- also think they seem awfully puffy, more so than the average parka. We travel north a lot to visit family and so we need coats that can deal with even snowier, colder winters than we normally get in D.C.
