If you think that buying experiences is more valuable than buying things, consider trapeze lessons, a session with you at a rock climbing gym, a sports event, a show, a meal at a nice restaurant together.
I like these ideas, with the caveat that most 14-year-olds have been to many rock-climbing birthday parties by this age, at one of the several rock climbing centers in the area. So the lessons would have to teach something besides "here's how to strap on the gear and be safe." I'm sure you can probably find lessons that go beyond the basic party instructions, if you specify that's what you want.
