She did not name the test, nor explain why she might be asked to do 3rd grade math while they were checking for mastery of 1st grade topics.

Sounds like Map-p which progressively gets harder as your child correctly answers the questions correctly. I have to agree with pp's, this sounds like a question for the teacher. Hen you can ask for scores.

I imagine that the OP did hear about the test from her child. So what's the next logical step, if you want to find out more about it? E-mail the teacher and say, "My child said that they did this test yesterday. Could you tell me a bit more about it?" Or get on DCUM and say, "Is everybody really doing this crazy test? How ridiculous!"

If it's Map-M, then yes, it is possible that your 1st grader could be tested on 3rd grade topics - because Map-M is designed to get progressively harder as your child shows mastery of the more basic skills.

To repeat:

The OP is asking whether

1. all first-graders in the county are taking "computerized tests featuring 3rd Grade Math topics"
2. isn't that ridiculous

Thereby leaping right over some basic information, for example

1. What is this "computerized test featuring 3rd Grade Math topics"?
2. What is MCPS's explanation for why the OP's first-grader is taking it?
3. Might MCPS's explanation be reasonable?

Does the OP ask any of these questions? I'm guessing not. Because otherwise the OP would know that it's the MAP-P (I'm assuming), and yes, everybody in the county takes it, and there are actually some good reasons for it.

To repeat: People come here to get a sense of other schools/a wide variety of opinions (sometimes too wide)/or a more honest answer then anyone would give in public.

Yes, let's assume that it is. Asking your teacher is, indeed, a great place to start. So why aren't people doing it? Because it's easier to come on DCUM and complain about MCPS.

Let's just assume that the answer to almost everything on here could be "ask your child's teacher". People come here to get a sense of other schools/a wide variety of opinions (sometimes too wide)/or a more honest answer then anyone would give in public.

Have you talked to your child's teacher?

Are all the First Graders in the County being given computerized tests featuring 3rd Grade Math topics, or is it just my ES? This seems ridiculous to me.
