I was a child of parents who each hired detectives to spy on each other -- whatever satisfaction or advantage in a divorce proceeding you think you may get by this in most instances will be outweighed by needless escalation of bitterness and distrust in other relationships for years to come in your lives. I'm not saying your approach is never appropriate, but very rarely worth it.

She needs to find out the truth so she can make informed decisions. In theory I understand what you're saying, but you've obviously never been in this situation. I have. My lunatic ex gaslighted me for years while he led a double life of sorts. I couldn't prove it, and so I stayed in my marriage. Unhappy and scared, but I had young kids and couldn't prove anything. I wish I had hired a PI years ago. I would have divorced him instead of wasting five more years of my life with a cheater.

My friend did. He told her that just about 100 percent of wives who suspect their husbands are having affairs are correct.
She's in another state, so no recommendations. But her first PI was a bumbling fool, and her husband spotted him and went after him with a baseball bat. The second guy was better and used a lot of electronic surveillance.
