IMHO, Manhassett. I like Long Islanders and it is a great part of the Island. And, 30 minutes to NYC on the train.

Taxes on Long Island are a nightmare -- we're talking 20k-30k a year.

Manhasset public schools are excellent and you're on the Port Washington line into the city - best line on the LIRR.

So, would you rather live in NY or DC? If my job was available in NY and wasn't tied to the US Government, I'd be out of here so fast your head would spin.

I suspect $2 million buys you a lot more in Bethesda than in Manhasset but I don't really know the specifics of NY RE prices. In Bethesda that's at the high end of the market. Bethesda is also closer to DC than Manhasset is to NY but that assumes you find being close to DC desirable (since it's not, you know, NY). Don't know what the public schools are like in Manhasset but admission to the NY private schools make the DC schools look like child's play.

Where would you live? Salary would be adjusted for cost of living. Comparing charm, safety, future RE appreciation, diversity etc. Budget at about $2m.
