How does it compare to Penn State or Temple?

We're NYers, so we hate everything about Jersey. Nobody in my family would EVER go there.

I wouldn't pay out of state tuition there. If you are from NJ then maybe, but not worth the $ otherwise.

Not the PP, but New Brunswick is a bit nasty, the campus is extremely spread out so on-campus commuting is actually very involved, and the different Rutgers undergrad colleges have vastly different facilities and look-and-feel features.

This is PP 12:36. You can get a great education there, or you can get skate by, as is true in lots of large state universities. I know a number of kids who went there, got involved in working for profs doing research, and got into great graduate programs. The social life is varied -- there are frats and sororities, lots of kids head into New Brunswick or take the train to NYC on weekends. It's a big place. There is something for everyone, but you will need to seek out a place for yourself. The social life probably won't come to you. Getting involved in extracurriculares will make a world of difference. Rutgers has many different dorm and other housing options. It has some excellent sports teams too, making for a fun school spirit. New Brunswick has a fair amount to do, but there are a few sketchy areas one should stay away from late at night. Not too different from other college campuses in semi-urban areas. The campus is pretty spread out -- kids ride the buses to classes unless they are close by. It works out.

Hope this is somewhat helpful.

I'm from NJ, used to work there, and am pretty familiar with campus life. It's a solid choice for a B average kid who likes a larger university campus, doesn't mind semi-urban, and doesn't need too much one on one support or hand-holding. Excellent research opportunities.
