Has OP even done the math to calculate the total taxes paid each year and the effective tax rate for the last 5 years? I've been married 2 years and this hasn't happened to us. We pay more taxes - but we make more money than in prior years and moved to DC where income tax is higher.

Don't see e getting married again! I claim my son from previous marriage and my partner claims our newborn.

You realize that that adjusting deductions isn't what the OP is complaining about. She's complaining about feeling ripped-off by disproportionate taxation.

If you get the same surprise every year, then it isn't a surprise, and you should adjust your withholding.

If you are bitching about paying 1 percent more in taxes to save your child from bastardy, then you should never have had kids.

My dad explained this to me with my first job. My refund is $400, which means I got my money throughout the year. Next year will be nice since I returned to grad school this January.

I like to owe money to the gov't. I don't want them holding my money hostage all year.

Yes years ago after I got married, my accountant (also a family friend) called me and told me I had to stop making short term trades because I was getting killed tax wise, thanks to my income being stacked on my DH's had put us in another bracket.

I pondered this as well; how wrong it is when nothing has changed but our marital status.

So I try and look at the other (non-government) benefits of being married!

There are benefits to being married that don't exist if you are single and you have to pay for them somehow.

We got the same surprise, three years in a row. This year we dropped to zero deductions. Fingers crossed!

It was a highly annoying sticker shock but we paid it and adjusted our W4s to have our employers deduct more money through the year.

Imagine my chagrin yesterday when turbo tax says that we owe AGAIN this year and this year's bill is even higher than last year. That's it!, I want a divorce, this is ridiculous. Neither one of us are high earners and we have a little girl so it's not like we are living high on the hog as it is. But to have to fork out money that we don't have to pay a yearly tax bill is not something I want to deal with yearly.

I (and I suspect my husband) was perfectly fine being unmarried in a relationship. We only got married because of our child, whom, Uncle Sam now says that we can only claim a minimal child credit deduction for because we 'earn too much'. Whaaaaatt?

I am filing for divorce. This is bullshit.

If you don't want to pay through filing your taxes, you and your spouse need to lower your deductions at work and more will be taken out every paycheck. There has always been a marriage penalty. It isn't new.
