Never mind, you add butter and milk, but it's pretty limited labor for a much less vegetable shortening taste.

Red will get bitter tasting if you use enough for a real red color. We ordered Elmo cupcakes for DD's second birthday and they tasted terrible.

Let them lick the spoon and they will love you forever!

Haha...so true. And better yet, let them help make it. They will have fun mushing the frosting and changing the color to red and whatever other color frosting you pick. My kids love to make frosting. They are 4 and 5.

Plus, it will taste soooo much better. For 20 to 30 cupcakes, this will be sufficient. If you need more, you will have the ingredients to make more anyway . Make sure you put a stick of butter out to get to room temp a few hours before you are ready to start decorating the cupcakes.

Materials:
1 1/2 c Powdered Sugar
1 stick of butter room temp, not melted
1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
1 Tbsp of heavy whipping cream

You can get those small cartons of heavy whipping cream from the grocery store in the yogurt section. 1 Tbsp should be plenty, but if you need more than you can add a little more if you think it needs it. Don't be so quick to add more whipping cream until you have mushed enough with the spoon.

Just mix/mush all the ingredients together in a bowl using the back of a spoon until you see the frosting forming. Just keep mushing until it looks like frosting...maybe 2 minutes or so.

Just use regular food coloring to make red frosting. If you want to do more colors then just make separate frosting bowls for decorating.

Oh, BTW, I have tried the gels. I prefer the regular food coloring to the gels.

Make sure to get a creamy, not whipped. Else your red will be pink. We buy creamy vanilla Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker. It's easy to make too.

For red food coloring, you can buy the liquid kind anywhere - Giant, SafewY, etc. The gel works better though, and you. An get that at places like Michaels or Party City. They have a red called "flavorless" red.

With the gels you want to use very very little. Keep adding a little with a toothpick.

I've never found a prepare frosting I like, though, unless it's something like the coconut frosting for a German chocolate cake.

Harris teeter sells their bakery frosting in tubs. Not sure about the Duncan Hines/Betty Crocker ones.
