Cake seems weird for a funeral. I think of cakes as celebratory. What about cookies?

I do like Harris Teeter cakes though.

OP here. We're having cake along with some sandwiches, cookies, apps, etc. It's a sevice being done at the church in the hall in the mid-late afternoon, and we have no idea how many people are coming. A plain white sheet cake is something that is easy to stretch to make sure that everyone has a bite to eat, as its not mealtime and we think most people will be coming from work and have to head back afterwards. It's not like we're planning to have writing or balloons on the cake.

And I don't know what kind of funerals you all go to, but we always have coffee and cake afterwards.


Well, I don't frequent funerals but the ones I have been to in this area either have had potlucks at someone's home sans sheet cake or catered at a location.

Skip the sheet cake and do a cookie platters. Same cost from the grocery store and it's a better choice for the occasion.

I think all the chains offer a less sweet icing. Ask if they have a whipped icing or something less sweet. I know you can order from gisnt online if you want to look at options, size and price.

The OP clearly started wegmans isn't an option.

Another vote for not serving cake at all, since you are having a coffee hour after the funeral you can do muffins or coffee / pound cake but a sheet cake seems in poor taste.

Wegmans. Ask for the whip cream icing as it isn't heavy and too sweet like the typical buttercreams (which I think are gross and always leftover on the plate).

Harris Teeter marble cake with cream cheese frosting. We always get tons of compliments on it.

Giant is our fav of the places you mentioned. Whole Foods is gross (and expensive), never had a sweet baked good at HT that I've liked, though I like their breads / rolls. Can't go wrong with Giant.

We have to do a quick turnaround large coffee hour for a funeral early next week. We want to get a sheet cake for it. Which store has the best icing, and in this case I define best as "not too chemical-tasting and not too sweet so you feel like you're going into a diabetic coma when you taste it". Also, none of us have a Costco membership or live near one. Wegmans is also out of the way. Easiest choices are Giant, Safeway, Harris Teeter and would prefer not to pay Whole Foods or Heidelberg prices.
