I'll second the Maine Ave. Fish Market on the SW waterfront.

I don't eat fish or seafood but my whole family does and we regularly buy from there and they say it's very high quality stuff.

Also try A&H, a small grocery on Bethesda Ave. in Bethesda. It's owned by a Spanish family and has a lot of very fresh fish and seafood that is flown in regularly. My family also loves the fish from there.

Local here and I, too, am completely sick of pale pink salmon. It looks like filet of baby.

I can't speak to the origin or quality of any of the fish though. Every time my father in-law visits, we head down there and he fills up an entire cooler with all kinds of stuff. You'll see people buying shrimp by the cart-load, so I assume some of their business comes from local restaurants. Worth a look!

I think there's just been a rush on salmon lately. whole foods was trying to offload a ton of it at a great price. give it a few weeks.

Just looked into Cobia and that is basically like Cod which is a bland UK fish and we have Haddok too which is in the same category as cod. Love Snapper though so thanks for that! Do you do smoked fish? Not like smoked Salmon.. Looks more like fresh fish but smells smoked. Widely used in Fish Pies etc

Also check out River Falls Market in Potomac. They may not have exactly what you described but they will have more than just salmon, tilapia, etc. Maybe you can find some new varieties to try while you are here .

Sea bream is a Mediterranean fish, so I would not want to buy it here unless I knew it had been flown in fresh (very recently). This is probably the case with a lot of the fish you list. There is some good Atlantic fish to be found here: cobia, haddock, and grouper and snapper from warmer water. The fresher the fish the tastier, so buy local!

Black Salt has a fish market attached. They get a wide variety of fish.

Skate is common here.

I'm not sure.. maybe some of them. I've just called WholeFood and they have just told me they have a few of them but not many at all. Gurnard is called Sea Robin in the states and the fishmonger said he has caught the before but there is no market for it. I think I'd be looking for a pretty speciality Fishmongers now and willing to travel.

We have just moved over from London and want to find a good quality fishmonger locally. We live by Dupont Circle.

Lots of restaurants and supermarkets seem to stock Salmon and a few other uninteresting fish and it is driving me crazy.. although you can get scallops etc. I don't eat meat you see and at home we love eating seafood and lots of great fish such as Gurnard, Dover Sole, Seabass, Seabream, Skate and Monkfish. Any help would be much much appreaicted! Also I love Razor Clams, Cuttlefish and Bottarga.
