OK, I recognize that GBRS is a part of the file and generally necessary, but parents should be prepared to rebut it when needed. My DC had excellent scores, but got a GBRS of 7 from his first year 2nd grade teacher. When I asked her about it, she said that he doesn't "display any gifted behaviors that we look for." I asked her what kinds of things she is looking for and she said, "When I teach 2 digit addition, I am looking for kids who can move right to three digit addition". I said, "Are you aware that DC can MULTIPLY 2 and 3 digit numbers in his head, calculate exponents in his head, and work with factorials". She responded, "Yes, I know he can multiply in his head, but what is a factorial? We aren't looking for that, we are looking for 3 digit addition". I asked her, "If he was doing calculus, would that be gifted?" Again, her response was, "No, we are looking for 3 digit addition." Um OK, we had to appeal, DC took the WISC (99.7 percentile), in on appeal. Very happy and successful in the 4th grade now.
A word to the wise, GBRS is only as good as the 2nd grade teachers ability and experience. Most are good, but not all!
Wow... that's very impressive.

Anonymous wrote:They don't even know the GBRS yet.....after February 7, the local committee meets and creates a file for each student ( in the pool and referred) Included n this file is the GBRS with commentary. Then the file is sent to the central committee where decisions are made. Our AART wouldn't release my son's file (last year) until decisions were returned from the central committee. I have a copy just for reference.
