Yes, I did it last year. Part year in DC, other part in VA. No problems, but you have to pay for both states, it gets expensive!

Op here, no we moved to va, all of us as a permanent move so we are part year in both states. Our ct home is now a rental. He works for a fed agency but is posted abroad.

You should be able to e file with Turbo Tax. We did part year last year when we moved and also did a work in one state live in another the previous year. It was a pain in the neck, though.

If you are residents of CT then file in CT. I assume you live in CT and your DH just travels to VA during the week and stays in the rental place here? If you have earned no income in VA you don't need to file in VA. Be careful that the employer hasn't changed the work location though.

Even if you do file in both you wouldn't have much interest/penalties for only 2 months in VA.

Don't know about turbo tax but you may owe penalties and interest in VA for not paying. At least at the fed level you are supposed to pay at least 90% of your tax by Jan 15 (and it needs to be at least quarterly) to avoid interest and penalties. VA may do the same. Definitely change your withholdings for 2014 as soon as you can.

We will be part year for CT and Va for state taxes. Will turbo tax allow us to efile? We never changed our state with payroll office once moving so all taxes taken out were CT.

How will that pan out? Will we owe in Va and get a large ct refund?
