We do not know what the long term picture is, but honestly that is the case with other charters too.The elementary school principal is stepping down, so there is a new search. She has generally been seen as highly effective. Another data point is that scores slipped a lot this year. There are lots of possible reasons for it and I do not think it reflects a sudden ineffectiveness of the teaching, but it is a data point worth noting and watching out for. It is a fairly large school, with two campuses, and so it doesn't feel as intimate as some schools (eg, parent group). It is pretty diverse. It does not seem to have as much parental involvement or intimate size as some charters, but I really like the parents I have met and appreciate the all school activities. I think year round is great for my kid and his teachers are wonderful. He is in a class with a 1:7 ratio, which I really appreciate.
So, basically we like it. Are we over the moon, we're never leaving? No, but we like it a lot and feel pretty lucky we got in. We are not sure whether we will enter the lottery this year. We might consider trying for pie in the sky chance at Mundo Verde or LAMB for bilingual education, but in general we are happy with our teachers and our child is thriving there, so we will probably stay put for the next couple years assuming things continue to go well.
thanks so much for this. My daughter is still too young for school but I am already attending a few open houses in and around our neighborhood to try to start getting the feel for some of the schools. I have friends who have kids in 3/4th grade at EL Haynes and they love it but so far most of the younger parents around us are all trying to get into CM and IT right now. Its so hard to know what the right fit will be for any kid so I appreciate this feedback. I have another year to worry about this...
