We have one neighbor with a snowblower, and if we are outside shoveling, he offers to lend the blower to us. He does for any neighbor that is out while he is snowblowing.

I assume this only applies to gas blowers? Ours is electric and has a long cord that gets plugged into an outlet. We can't really be the stealth Good Samaritan. I suppose we could knock on our neighbors doors? If someone asked to borrow it, we'd gladly lend it out.

Your neighborhood sounds awesome

I do my entire block, the sidewalk and anyone who wants me to do there I do. They usually provide me with plenty to drink at the block party so I am known as snowblower guy.

Of course you are not obligated. But why wouldn't you just be nice and do your neighbors on either side (assuming they have normal amounts of sidewalk/driveway)?

cost of doing it: 2-5 minutes of time
benefit of doing it: neighborly goodwill
cost of not doing it: lost opportunity to bank goodwill with neighbors
benefit of not doing it: additional 2-5 minutes of time to your day

OP here. We don't have one yet; I'm just wondering. How many neighbors down the block on each side do you do (we're in the middle of the block)? Do you do their sidewalks AND their walkways?

It would be nice.

I think it would be nice to help them out. At home my neighbors did my parents' driveway one year before they got one. It's good karma-- it takes you what 5 minutes?

We have a very short sidewalk-- think DC rowhouse. The sidewalk is maybe 10 ft. One of my neighbors always does ours if they are out there first. Likewise if we're out there we do theirs as well as the single woman next door.

For blower owners, do you find it awkward to use your blower on your walk and sidewalk while your neighbors are out there shoveling? Do you feel obligated to do theirs or to loan them your blower?
