It seemed easy until you start missing the sauces/dressing in food. Then you realize, everything has some form of gluten. And eating out becomes tough. You can't just stop at a rest stop and grab something to eat.
Then you take vitamins supplements and realize oh, it has wheat. Then you get sick and realize, oh, you can't take those meds.

Eveyrone has already mentioned the usual, but there are some junk foods I was surprised had gluten--Twizzlers, o some caramels. Pringles.

Dextrose is derived from wheat.

McDonald's french fries have gluten in them. I don't eat there more than a few times a year (usually while traveling), but I was very sad to learn that.

I've seen recommendations for a smartphone app that has a lot of info on chain food restaurants. It isn't too hard when you are eating at home, but can be really tough when you are on the road.

I once accidentally fed a celiac kid in my class peanut butter with molasses in it, and the molasses apparently had food coloring with gluten in it?

Quest bars say GF but I am 99 percent positive they aren't. I keep trying and trying bc I love the taste but I'm pretty sure they have some form of gluten.

Nestle butterscotch chips. They have barley protein. (I like to bake). Hershey's butterscotch chips are GF, but I haven't seen those in stores.

There are lots of hidden gluten sources in foods. You can google it for a list but watch out for "modified food starch," "hydrolyzed vegetable protein" (in most canned soups), malt, barley…the list goes on. Some people are so sensitive that they have to buy organic grass-fed beef because more generic beef can be tainted with gluten.

Oatmeal is another trigger. You can only buy certified gluten free oatmeal (Bob's Red Mill is great).

Udi's Gluten Free bread is good, Better Batter Flour is good. Andean Dream has a good quinoa pasta.
Amazon, Gluten Free Mall is great resources for buying gluten free foods.

The biggest thing with gluten free is gluten free grains aren't necessarily good for you. So still eat gluten free grains in moderation and focus on lean meats, veggies, etc. I recently started doing Paleo 80-90% of the time and mostly omitted grains and I feel great.

I went gluten free April 1 and cut out almost all chemicals/processed foods and can't believe how great I feel plus have dropped 25 pounds of middle-age weight. If you like wine or beer, try hard cider. I did since beer is liquid gluten and really like it.

Be very careful in restaurants. Almost all salad dressings and sauces contain gluten. Soy sauce, beer, malt flavoring, modified food starch and vanilla extract are less obvious ones that may or may not contain gluten. You can't eat fried foods in most restaurants because they are fried in the same oil as things with breading. My husband has celiac disease so he has to be very careful.

Any suggestions/warnings about foods that you'd assume would be gluten-free but aren't? I just don't want to spend so much time thinking I'm truly GF and then discovering that some random chemical name I don't recognize is actually full of gluten. I've seen some websites with decent explanations -- is that really all I need? Thank you!
