Yes, and Pimmit Hills will surpass SF high society in its elegance. Who needs a Pacific Heights mansion when you could entertain in style in a ranch house overlooking the Toll Road?

With the terrible tax and anti business policies of California it is only a matter of time until companies leave and go to more hospitable environments like NOVA.

Don't forget MD and VA have some of the best STEM universities in the nation which produced a google founder .

It would have happened by now - remember, people were putting "Internet Capital" license plates on their cars as early as 1998-99. The fact that it hasn't means we still have a long way to go. Not as many VCs here.

tech, unlike other industries requires less physical capital and plant and yet the bulk of the action is still in the valley because people matter..network effects matter...they aren't going to trade it in for northern fucking Virginia.

nova is big in legacy tech, as a communication/internet hub, and defense-driven tech.

but it is a fraction of what's in the valley

This. I'm in IT in NOVA FWIW.

As someone who has run tech companies here and in the bay area, tax policy isn't going to make a difference in anyone's decisions, unless you are building a factory or distribution center with lots of floor space and low wage labor, like the Google data center or a PC manufacturing operation.

The power of Silicon Valley is the concentration of expertise in all areas pertaining to technology, on the business and technical sides. No matter what kind of job you need to fill, chances are someone there has done it before.

The negatives of SV are the very high wage rates and the willingness of employees to hop from company to company. If you area already working in multiple geographies, you quickly realize that you are paying 50% more than the East Coast employees and more than double what you can get in other countries, and not just low wage countries but pretty solid tech pools like Israel. These SV wages are not created by tax policy. It's the demand for talent.

DC has one strategic advantage, which is that the Federal Government is a large consumer of services, a buffer against market cycles, and the source of some pretty unique technology demands. Wages are pretty high here, better than SV but it is more of a struggle to find the top level of talent here, and consequently they also cost a lot even though the average programmer, sysadmin or DBA is lower paid.

Ultimately, SV's grip on technology will have to loosen, because the importance of location will increasingly weaken. But it won't be because of government.

Look at Ashburn's datacenter infrastructure. The statistics are flooring. 70% of ALL internet traffic flows through Loudoun County.

I'm not sure if it is taxes that are the draw, but more like a highly qualified workforce, plus a state that works hard to draw the companies in.

It's always been the center for Internet Communications, due to the history of the Internet.

This is simply one example. As someone in IT, I can promise you that the IT footprint is not a monolith. Far from it. Most jobs are not even datacenter jobs. Datacenters do not create jobs. The amount of software engineers, developers, and cyber security experts in the area is astounding.

If you are not in it, you don't see it. This is exactly why Loudoun County has such wealth. So many people have struck gold with these small IT start up companies and they are not internet or telecommunication companies, that ship has sailed. Big bucks right now in Big Data Analytics and cyber security/cyber forensics. That is fueling the growth right now.

Agree. But it could take time. Once all the defense contractors leave tysons and the economy is back to normal, the next hot thing will move in, probably tech again like 15 years ago and venture capitalists. it will be like going back in time.

And don't forget that a TON of that silicone valley manufacturing has move to Mexico. In particular Guadalajara...especially since Mexico is a TAA compliant country, unlike China and India.
