We are in MCPS - I believe my DD is the only kid in her class who started late. I don't know about the other K classes. So I think the percentage is quite low in our school.

Before starting K, I called my local public and spoke to the head Kindergarten teacher who told me the stats for her class. Might be something to try, it's at least some info.

A fourth of our dips has birthdays July or later for current 1st grade.

19:00 again. My curiosity got the best of me so I searched my email, and here is the response from March 2010. (Clearly I am in a time warp!)

"We don’t maintain that information, and the age/grade table uses January 1 as a calculation date which masks the students who are 6 for Kindergarten as of 9/30 because that is 6 as of 1/1 which would include students who turned 6 in October through December.

I emailed FCPS last year inquiring about data on red shirting. I was told they don't have it (or don't make it available?).

I redshirted my my Aug. kid in middle school. Do it now, as we should have done by at least the second grade but didn't because the school advised against it because of possible social issues. After years of second guessing ourselves we took the plunge in middle school, definitely the right decision, but wish we had followed our instincts earlier. Don't feel we rushing DC through anymore. Anyway, the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Had a friend who did this in middle school years ago at the time of a move. Had wanted to do it before that, but the social issues got in the way. If in doubt, hold back.

We are at a sought after public charter in DC. No red-shirting since entrance is done by lottery and kids are put into the appropriate class according to their birthdate. Fully 1/4 of the class has summer birthdays so no issues about red shirting.
