I did a 3-day cleanse by Dr. Oz. I can't remember the name, but you can find it if you look on his site. It wasn't a liquid diet, instead, it was a series of smoothies that contained "clean" proteins, veggies, and fruits. The purpose wasn't to lose weight (I believe the shakes were around 1200 calories per day), but I ended up losing 3-4 pounds and felt energized and, well, cleansed, at the end of the three days. Sidenote-- My Mom, who is also diabetic, was also approved by her doctor to do a cleanse. Her doctor just advised her to keep close tabs on her blood sugar and stop if she didn't feel well, which I'm sure you already know. To the PP- Would also like to add that my Mom exercises regularly and is within a healthy weight range. Still hasn't "kicked" diabetes, however her blood sugar is well controlled. I find the idea that "diabetes is reversible" so annoying since the people who chant it seem to believe diabetes is just a lifestyle choice.

I'm. Type II might be, but type 1 sure isn't.

90% of diabetes are type 2. A 50yr old getting diabetes is by definition is type 2.

When talking about the diabetes epidemic people mean type 2. Type one is marginal to the diabetes discussion.

You should look at doing a Whole 30. Diets don't work. Lifestyle change does.

I heard about the 5-2 diet last week on NPR and have since looked into it. I believe it might be possible for you to do. It sounds more gentle than what you are thinking of...it is 2 non consecutive days of "fasting" that is eating 600 calories if you are male, 500 if you are female.

If your doctor approved it but offered no further guidance, see a nutrition expert. You can search for a nutritionist by location and area of expertise here:

Good luck.

OP here. Doctor approved already, otherwise I wouldn't have posted suggestions. I'm not talking a no-foods fast here.

Hi All,

Some background: Male, 50y.o, chubby, diagnosed with diabetes in October 2013. Take Janumet (Januvia Metformin combo pill) and chromium picolinate. Lisonopril for blood pressure. Alalfa, b-12, fish oil for general health.

I'd like to do some sort of fast/cleanse/detox over the three day weekend, starting tonight or saturday morning and going until tuesday morning/lunch. Any suggestions appreciated, based on DCUMer's experiences.

Thanks
