I disagree, OP. I hate all their hairstyles. The makeup is kind of good, I guess. But also it's clear these are rich ladies or not-rich ladies photographed in their "Sunday best."

There's tons of poor white trash who pull it together to look great for their Christmas cards. For all we know, these women are the PWT of their time.

Love,
A white woman

What do you mean by composition?

BTW, have you read The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton? So bleeping tragic. I'm glad I live now.

No, I've never read "The House of Mirth."

What makes you ask?

The inter-war period. All the luxuries of before the war, but many conveniences of modern day life.

Yeah, the organ-deforming corsets and the arsenic-containing face powder really helped. (I once saw a 19th-century add for tapeworms that women could swallow.)

And these women were wealthy, had servants who dressed them and did their hair, had all their clothing custom-tailored for them, and their job was to look nice. The clothing was incredibly restrictive. The penultimate photo is especially beautiful, but I don't think I'd like the lifestyle that it took to get that.

For some reason, the first photo isn't showing up.

Sorry about that.

It's not that, it's the quality, tones and black and white of the photographs! Nowadays with color, sharpness and HD, people will see every imperfection and pore of your skin!

We could all look like that if we had the help and money they did.

Ick. Constricted, hot, expensive and obnoxiously ornate.

If the following images aren't beautiful, then I don't know what is.

I especially love the hair and the clothing.
