OP, I think 10 years old is pretty old to be crying about getting a shot. Was it really sobbing, or just a little tearing up? Does he often cry in response to unpleastant things?

Maybe the shot was exceptionally painful to him? I get shots, my kids get shots, and it's just a pinch, a little "ow" but nothing we cry over. And we're not stoic or anything. We cry over things that are sad, or that really hurt.

So I'm wondering if this shot hurt more than usual? Or if he tensed up a lot and that made it hurt more?

Why is a 10 year old getting shots? Is he on some special vaccine schedule? Or a flu shot?

You're probably not whipping him enough at home.

Someone had mentioned that the needles maybe are bigger at that age-- I hadn't thought of that. Maybe that was the issue. Maybe there is something I can do next time to reduce the pain for him proactively.

Sucking. I unwrap a lollipop and hold it in front of my kids. The second the shot goes in I stuff their face with the lollipop and say "Suck." They are so focused on getting to that moment that there's a lot less crying and fussing.

Serious question here. How are you new to parenting a ten year old? Did you parent a nine year old, who then turned 10? If so, it's not a magical boundary line.

Would you have posted this if your DC was a DD? If not, wow.

He's a child. Give him a hug, for God's sake.

Totally normal. Please do not make him feel like he needs to be a man. He's not a man, he's a boy. Please do not make him feel like only girls cry and boys have to be tough. That's not true, and will just create a situation where your son doesn't come to you with his upsets.

Maybe they use bigger needles for older kids? Have you ever gotten a tetanus shot? Those things hurt like a mother. I almost cried when I got mine a few years ago.

I know adults that cry when they get shots. Maybe cut the kid a break unless you feel that his responses to stressful situations are often inappropriate.

Is this normal? when he was younger it made sense, but I expected him to be a bit tougher about these things.
